The Treo 650 increased the dependence tenfold - not so much because I had one less device to carry, but because I didn't have to be the network connecting my phone book and phone anymore. Then I found I had two fewer devices to carry, because the Treo makes a solid MP3 player as well. With some amazing games, it might even take the place of a gameboy (if I carried one of those). Then my Treo 650 died - or rather de-evolved. I could still send text messages, read email, listen to music... but not talk on the phone (I suspect the microphone broke). One trip to my carrier, and enter the Treo 680. So it looks better, and mostly feels better with a significant exception. No more antenna is good. It's thinner than the 650, too. They moved some of the buttons around (top buttons went from "home" and "menu" to "start" and "stop", outermost buttons went from "start" and "stop" to "phone" and "home"). By far the biggest change for me was in the 5-way control - the ergonomics got worse. I've had the 680 for a week and I'm still having trouble hitting the middle "select" button without accidentally navigating off the icon I'm trying to hit. Do you need to break in a Treo like a pair of shoes? I've seen a number of complaints about the battery life, and my 680 went completely dead the second day I had it (which I don't recall my 650 doing, ever). But Palm has posted a fix for a power drain from the camera, so I'm not ready to say it's a device problem yet. As mentioned, the best thing I've found in the new Garnet software is better ringtone control - specifically the ability to select ringtones on the individual or category level in the Contacts database. This is fantastic if you use your phone as much as I do. All my coworkers share a ringtone, as do my family members. My team has a different one, and my wife another. I'd been hoping for this when I started putting them all in categories years (and at least 3 devices) ago. Like I said - I got a Treo because I wanted better integration. The specs say the hardware is all the same (or nearly so) for the bluetooth and camera, but to me both seem superior. My 680 has less static on my palm headset The 680 comes with PocketTunes and Documents-to-go, which seem like great tools - the platform strength has always been in the third-party apps, and including popular ones seems like a good way to keep the bar high. I have no idea why Plam would again miss the boat on A2DP (Advanced Audio Distribution Profile) - the technology that allows you to use stereo headsets with bluetooth. They clearly "get" the music player angle of the device - that's why they bundle PocketTunes. I'm looking at some cool software from Softick Software to fill that gap. |

is an incremental enhancement to the older 650. It's a little smaller, and there are some great software updates in the OS and core applications as well as nice additions bundled in. I wonder if it could have been more of an upgrade, but overall it's got some really cool features if your current smartphone is getting long in the tooth.
